King's High Students Conduct Professional Orchestra

Ahead of yet another fantastic Orchestara of the Swan concert last week, Polly and Taya had the truly unique opportunity to conduct the professional orchestra during their rehearsals on Wednesday afternoon along with James and Tommy from Warwick School

In the morning, Rebecca Miller led a session on score analysis of Mozart 40, exploring the tricky passages and discussing how students could approach this with the musicians. She recommended sources for students to refer to and the importance of having a detailed knowledge of every instrument in the orchestra. They then continued with score analysis - also very detailed - including Schenkerian analysis and focusing on specific bars within the music. This analysis was far more advanced than GCSE/A Level Harmony.

Students then went through rehearsal technique, and practiced conducting to each other without the orchestra, this is an important skill as is often how conductors rehearse.

The feedback from both Rebecca and the orchestra, along with the opportunity itself, was extremely valuable for the students and results from the strong partnership between the Foundation and Orchestra of the Swan.
