The Dignity of Difference

“The glory of the created world in its astonishing multiplicity; the thousands of different languages spoken by mankind, the proliferation of cultures, the sheer variety of the imaginative expressions of the human spirit, in most of which, if we listen carefully, we will hear the voice of wisdom telling us something we need to know.  That is what I mean by the dignity of difference.”- Jonathan Sacks

At King's High, our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) team is deeply committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their sexual orientation, neurodiversity, disability, gender, race, faith, or any other personal characteristic. We believe that flourishing goes beyond academic success. It encompasses access to a supportive community, involvement in co-curricular activities, and the chance to enjoy a well-rounded school experience that celebrates each student’s individuality.

Our ethos is built on nurturing every student as a unique individual, empowering them to express their beliefs, distinctiveness and character within a safe and inclusive environment. Through a wide range of events, such as Neurodiversity Afternoon Tea, Inter-Faith Week, Pride Fair, Chinese New Year celebrations, and Diwali dining menus, we actively engage our community in celebrating diversity and promoting mutual understanding. Additionally, assemblies and educational programmes throughout the year are designed to raise awareness and provide support.

Our student-led Equalities Committee, working closely with the EDI team, plays an important role in shaping school policies and driving curriculum changes to create an even more inclusive school environment. Together, we are preparing our students to embrace and contribute to a diverse global community.

Mrs Jewell is our King’s High EDI Lead, supported by Mrs Carter-Howell and a wider EDI team including Mrs Watson, Mrs Whittington, and Mrs Montiel, working closely with our Learning Support and Wellbeing Teams. They work with our Equalities Prefects and Ambassadors and a wider body of students who serve on our Equalities Committee.

Their work covers core areas including neurodiversity, LGBT+, interfaith, anti-racism and English as an Additional Language. As well as promoting a strong culture of equality, diversity and inclusion, a range of key events support this work from our Big Conversations Series, Show Racism the Red Card, Neurodiversity Week, Pride Fair, Chinese New Year and Lunar Festivals, and our European Day of Languages.
